30 Days of running – Day 1

I don’t get it! I was on a streak! I just broke the double digits per run and was running the tread off of my running shoes.  It was really mind-boggling to me.   I took and passed my Fitness assessment with no problems.  I changed my running sneakers to  the Brooks Ravenna running sneaker because I’d run over 500miles on the old ones.  Then all of a sudden out of nowhere,  I’m I started feeling pain in my lower legs whenever I ran.   Run after run, I’d get 1.5 miles down the road and the pain would stop me in my tracks.  Doctors can’t tell me what the problem is, running sneaker experts tell me I am in the best shoe for my feet and Fitness experts, say try different styles of running. All of the advice, however, didn’t stop the pain.

Now, here it is 8 weeks later, and I haven’t had a full pain free run since. I slowed down my running in an effort to rest, and to try to recuperate. But every run since changing my sneakers has been more and more painful.  What’s more, the more I tried to simply rest it, the more other things started to get in the way and running was pushed to the back burner.  I started feeling tired all of the time, and my anxiety levels were rising.  It also didn’t help that I enrolled in an accounting program and sleep has become a vanishing commodity. I remember reading somewhere that energy does not dissipate, it is merely transferred.  Which is why many fitness experts tell you if you are feeling stressed or anxious, you should create a workout plan. After 8 weeks of limited running has gotten the better of me.

At this point 20 miles in on these Brooks sneakers (which at this point I would not recommend) and  just over 2 months later, the results have been the same, Painfull!  I will say that over those two months, running on the indoor track with these shoes has not been much of an issue, however, I really don’t like running in circles or stationary running.

I haven’t been running like I used to and my body is starting to feel a bit sluggish, and I don’t like it.  I want to get back to the level of fitness that I’d reached before I switched out my shoes.  Since no one can tell me if there is something actually wrong.  I guess I’ll just try to run through the pain.

Prior today, I’ve run off and on. Not enough to maintain my previous level of fitness but, enough to know I can get up and muscle through a fitness test at any point and get a low passing score.  So, when I got up and announced that I was running 4-miles to a sleeping audience, I knew it would be a challenge.  I figured I’ve done it before, on a consistent basis, my body should remember and adjust, right?  So I strapped on my trusted TomTom Sports Watch, turned on my Spotify running playlist, and I hit the road!

Just like clockworks, 1 mile into the run, my lower legs started to burn (I ran without the calf sleeve in order to gauge the difference between running with them and running without them). Determined to finish, the first 2-miles of my run turned into an interval run, where I ran until the pain was too much and walked for 2 minutes.   The second 2-miles was a bit more bearable and I was able to finish the run non-stop and almost pain-free.

I am determined to finish my goal of running 13.1!  First order of business I need to do a sneaker check!
