I used to be all about getting work done over the weekend. But, then I felt like I was working all the time. I never had the energy to do much of anything else. All I wanted to do was enjoy time with my family, maybe take a weekend trip or even just go on a hike. I felt, however, like if I wasn’t working, I was not being productive. For the goal-oriented person, the weekend needs to be about a different type of goal! The Family Oriented Goal!
I’m sure you heard the story of the man on his death-bed who wished for more time to spend with his family. He had acquired lots of wealth from all of the work he did. However, he sacrificed his family in order to gain money status and position but he had no time to enjoy it. This is not the scenario you want to be in at the end of your life. Wouldn’t you like to look back and say “I lived the good life”
I’ve often heard people say “work hard, play hard”. This is exactly the approach I want you to take in life. Do the work that is required of you during your work week. But when the weekend comes get out and do something.
These are some of the inexpensive things that I have taken advantage of:
- Go on a hike
- Go see something new in your town
- Start a running program
- Build or create something
- Do science projects with your children
- Work on a hobby
So here is what I want you to do. This week, plan your weekend. If you must do some type of work limit it to less than an hour or two, but do it before your family wakes up. This way, you are available to them their entire waking day. The point is to use the weekend to have fun and enjoy life with your loved ones.
