5 Steps to keep your computer safe

Perhaps one of the most important concepts when it comes to computer usage is online security!  Browsing the internet safely.  But this is not only security for yourself  but with more and more young school age children surfing the internet, the focus on being safe has become important to the children as well.  There are some very simple steps you can take to ensure your computer remains protected while you an your children surf the Web. Following each of these five guides can help protect your PC from virus, spyware and other online threats.
1.  Update Windows
If you are a Microsoft user, Microsoft regularly releases free downloads to fix security problems with Windows, Internet Explorer and other Microsoft software such as Office. Visit Microsoft’s security site for the latest updates (http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.aspx).
2. Install a Firewall
A good firewall, such as Comodo Firewall for Windows (http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/free-download.html), will prevent programs from accessing the Internet without your permission.  Good Firewalls also block and prevent access to your computer online predator’s and intruders. In addition to a good firewall it is imperative that you have an anti-virus protection installed and in active use on your system.
3. Scan for Viruses
Trojans and other malicious virus code can infect your system files and damage your important data. As well as send important data back to its creator using your internet connection. Installing and using an anti-virus software will help in deterring these malicious code from infecting your system.4. Remove Spyware
Spyware is malicious code that tracks your movements on the Internet and can even affect your PC’s performance. Using software’s such as Spybot and Ad-Ware can help remove such malicious code from you system.  And Finally…5. Browse More Safely
Always, always always, use latest web browsers such as Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 and Google Chrome 6.0 (more on Google chrome by visiting Google.com or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome) offer security features like pop-up blockers and phishing filters to keep you safe when visiting web sites.  Do not click on web link that you are unsure where they go!!These steps will help keep you and your children safe while browsing the internet.
