Free Antivirus software

Written by Corey L. Stokes

Recently, while working on a clients computer I was asked about using a free antivirus software. Although I’ve used several before which turned out not to be free at all, I can honestly say that from a professional standpoint I am not a big fan. In addition to the hidden charge that popped up, many of the “FREE” antivirus software did not do very much protecting of the system. In fact my client made the statement that the one he attempted to use “ended up being a virus”.

Although I don’t endorse the use of free antivirus software. I do know that the economy has put a great deal of stress on many pocketbooks. Which makes it extremely difficult for many to purchase a good virus protection software.  I’ve done some research and have come across several antivirus also come with very high ratings.

The results are plentiful if you do a Google or Bing search for “free antivirus” but, the free version of Avast Antivirus comes highly recommended. As a free/temporary solution here is what you can do. Download Avast Antivirus they rave that their free software “often outperforms our competitors´ paid products and is the minimum protection you should have — it provides great protection against viruses and spyware.”

With any free software however you will lose some functionality that you do not get with the full software. I recommend not using the free version as a permanent solution. As soon as you are able, upgrade to a full version antivirus software to fully protect your IT assets.
